WELCOME CHURCH – A CHURCH WITHOUT WALLS
Welcome Ministry of El Cajon is an ecumenical outreach of worship, mercy, and justice. As Christ taught us to be a good neighbor, our mission is to bring God’s hope and love to those who are homeless by offering:
- spiritual care,
- assistance with securing housing,
- help in accessing healthcare, and
- companioning counsel and fellowship.
Welcome Church – A Church without Walls first gathered in 2016 at Wells Park in El Cajon, continuing there until summer 2019 when we began meeting in Lakeside near Lindo Lake County Park. Welcome Church is led by clergy of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, The Episcopal Church, and the United Methodist Church. Each month Welcome Church brings worship from inside a building to public areas in East San Diego County where homeless gather. After services we share in fellowship with our free community picnic where everyone – housed and unhoused – eat together.
Lay members lead prayers, transport tables and chairs, prepare the altar for Holy Communion, and distribute our community picnic. Two area churches, St. Alban’s Episcopal and First Presbyterian – both of El Cajon – assist us.
